Here's
the straight pitch
on Dual Credit
|
|
Why are educators suddenly so interested
in dual credit? Perhaps with projections that most jobs
in the future will require some level of postsecondary
education, Kentuckians realize that more students must
make successful transition to postsecondary education.
In order to accomplish that, all levels of education must
collaborate and cooperate to create pathways for student
engagement and success.
For many students the unproductive senior year in high
school must give way to bridges between secondary and
postsecondary with strong dual credit, dual enrollment
and articulation models that make optimal use of limited
resources and support student success.
|
High school students will experience
many benefits from participating in dual credit including; low
cost to no cost tuition for college courses, development of
a college transcript while still attending high school, enroll
in college classes without necessarily attending the college
campus, mobilize their college plan early by taking pre-requisite
college coursework, and create the bridge to postsecondary education
that might not materialize without this type of initiative.
Presently over 70% of our college dual credit courses are tuition
free. What does that mean to the student? The typical 3 credit
hour course would cost the student about $345.00, plus text
and fees. Many dual credit students enter our institution
after high school graduation with as many as 15 credit hours
of dual credit. That amounts to $5,175.00 in tuition savings
alone!
